Day 1 | Oregon | Portland to La Grande | Spring Creek Campground
This is Day 1 of our 41 day, 10,000 mile, All American Road Trip. The road trip started on September 14th 2021. In this episode, Inga and I begin near Portland, OR, and head 275 miles east to La Grande, OR. In La Grande, we had a few dispersed camping spots that we had previously researched. The campground we ended up staying at is easily accessible from Interstate 84. It was under 2 miles from the exit on I-84 East.
The name of the Campground is called Spring Creek Campground. I found it on Google Maps. It’s located in the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. The National Forest has 2.4 million acres of public lands in northeastern Oregon and western Idaho.
It’s free to camp here for up to 14 days. No reservations can be made as the sites are first come, first served. There are only 4 spots total in Spring Creek Campground. None of the spots have hook-ups, but there is a vault toilet which appears to be maintained regularly, and in good shape.
The campground is used for hunting and therefore you may encounter the remains of a recent hunt in your campsite or as you travel through different parts of the campground. Other than that, we had no issues with the campground itself, or the other people who were staying there that night as well.
